Quality walkways start with proper planning. We consider where the walkway needs to go, how it will be used, what obstacles we need to work around, and how to make it look great with your landscaping. Next comes excavation and base preparation. We dig deep enough to install a solid gravel base that drains well and resists settling. This is especially important in our area where soil movement is common. We compact the base thoroughly and make sure everything is graded properly so water runs off instead of pooling on the walkway.
For most residential walkways, we pour concrete 4 inches thick and 3 to 5 feet wide. We install wire mesh reinforcement to prevent cracking. We also create control joints every 4 to 6 feet. These joints give the concrete predetermined places to crack as it expands and contracts, which keeps the surface looking clean even if minor cracks do develop over time.
The finish is important too. For standard walkways, we use a broom finish that provides good traction even when wet.
